This paper reports a practice using TED Talks videos for self-study assignments. Students in the fifth year of KOSEN watched one video every week, wrote their comments, and extracted ten words they wanted to learn from the scripts. The words in the scripts and the words extracted by the students were analyzed using Oxford Text Checker. The analysis provided the classification of words according to the CEFR levels. Using KH Coder and Microsoft Word, the frequency and the positions of the extracted words were analyzed. The students seemed to have extracted words which were directly related to the topic of the speeches. While the result of a questionnaire showed students’ positive attitudes toward TED Talks, appropriate vocabulary lists or learning activities should be prepared when using TED Talks as assignments.
