This paper examines the determinants affecting the formation of social capital by using the individual questionnaire survey data in Japan. Unlike the substantial literatures, this research divides the social capital into bonding and bridging two types and finds out they are indeed influenced by different factors. The individual characteristics such as age, income and marriage etc. already pointed out by previous studies, are proved to have great influence on social capital in Japan's case. Besides, the research also finds that education and home ownership are two key factors to differentiate the bonding and bridging social capital. This finding also implies the importance of differentiating the bonding and bridging SC when policy makers considering making use of social capital in the sustainable regional development.
