Abstract

Japan has set the goal of achieving carbon neutrality (CN) in 2050 but still needs to clarify how to proceed with emission reductions and expanded carbon dioxide removals toward CN. In this study, using the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report scenario database, we analyzed the progress of emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals toward Japan's CN in 2050 and the states of CN. The results showed that the residual emissions and CO2 removals at the time of CN achievement varied between the scenarios. Corresponding to this range, the reduction of residual emissions and the expansion of CO2 removals leading up to the CN were different in each scenario, but on average, most scenarios focused on emission reductions, with a limited number of scenarios focused on CO2 removals.
