Many functions such as improvement of fluidity, durability, fireproof, insulation, humidification and dimensional stability and the weight reduction can be expected by introducing voids in concrete. However, the mix proportions and the manufacturing method are various in a present method, and each technique has its problem. On the other hand, mixing superabsorbent polymers(SAP)in concrete is expected to take various voids with targeted volume and diameter without difficulty.
In recent years, the problems connected with heat-island in urban areas have gradually begun. As one of the solution strategy of the phenomenon the water permeable and retainable pavement is expected. High water retainability of SAP is paid attention, and aims to obtain the fundamental data necessary to consider the possibility of application of concrete which can adjust surface temperature in this research. For that purpose concrete mixed with dry SAP with different average diameter and mass was manufactured. First, evaluation method to determine the water absorption capacity of SAP in concrete, which is based on mortar flow measurements, was proposed. And the compressive strength, water permeation height and absorption mass due to capillary tension and oxygen permeability of each mixture were compared. As a result, the some characterristics of concrete mixed with SAP are found.
