Advanced control strategy is required for the optimal performance of the point absorber wave energy converter (PA WEC). Model predictive control (MPC) has demonstrated one of the best power production performances of all control strategies tested on WECs. The prediction horizon length is one of the critical parameters of the MPC. The computation time for the optimized problem is highly affected by the length of the prediction horizon and sample interval. This paper aims to develop an MPC real-time control strategy for PA-WEC to improve energy absorption efficiency. We are concerned about how the prediction horizon length and sample interval influence the efficiency of the MPC strategy for regular waves. Based on these findings, the optimal value of the prediction horizon length of MPC is investigated in terms of efficiency.
