A new type of semi-submersible platform called OPTIFLOW FOWT is now proposed. It has three long horizontal pontoons. Naito et al. pointed out that these pontoons induce Vortex-Induced Motion (VIM) in vertical directions. They also pointed out that the direction of the motion is different depending on the flow angles towards the platform. It has been suggested that the presence or absence of a pontoon parallel to the flow on the wake side affects the coherence of the vortices in the wake, but this has not been confirmed.
In this research, Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations are performed to analyze the cause of the vertical moment and the difference in its direction. This research focused on how Vortex-Induced Forces occur and therefore simulated over a fixed OPTIFLOW platform.
As a result, in roll, it is suggested that the incoherence of the cycle of roll moment on pontoons can cause the whole motion to roll direction. In pitch, the flow generated a steady moment in the opposite direction.
