Abstract
A novel oxidative acetylation was found in the oxidation of hydroxyalkyl sulfides (IIIa to VIIIa) with 30% H2O2-AcOH. Whereby it was concluded that when the hydroxyl can conformationally approach the sulfur atom the sulfide is prone to acetylation during the oxidation. An oxidation-acetylation mechanism has been proposed for the reaction as summarized in Chart 4.
