Dehydrogenation of lindenenyl acetate (Ib) by palladium was studied. The reaction was found to proceed directly to a final product (linderazulene (II)) by a main route, and partly to II via a dihydroazulene intermediate (IV), by a concerted mechanism. Dehydrogenation of Ib in deuteropentane showed that palladium has properties of both a dehydrogenation and a hydrogenation catalyst under N2, at 300°.
