It was confirmed that the nitration of 9-phenylselenoxanthylium salt (III) with a mixed acid (1 equivalent of HNO3) gave 9-(p-nitrophenyl)- and 9-(m-nitrophenyl) selenoxanthylium salts in the product ratio of 1.0 to 1.5. On the other hand, the reaction of III with a mixed acid (5 equivalents of HNO3 in H2SO4) gave 4-nitro-9-(p-nitrophenyl)- and 4-nitro-9-(m-nitrophenyl) selenoxanthylium salts in the product ratio of 1.0 to 1.25. Based on these results, the reactivity of III in the nitration has been discussed.
