Abstract
Like diethylstilbestrol (II), 3, 3'-dihydroxy-α, β-diethylstilbene (I), an isomer of II, had strong ichthyotoxicity and coronary vasodilator action on the isolated guinea-pig heart. The median tolerance limit (TLm) at 48 h was 3.00 ppm in Oryzias latipes and 3.20 ppm in Carassius auratus. The ichthyotoxic activity of I was stronger than that of II. The vasodilator activity of I in the isolated guinea-pig heart (ED50 : 4.30 μg/ heart) was weaker than that of II (ED50 : 0.26 μg/heart). However, the action of I was stronger than that of papaverine (ED50 : 7.0 μg/heart), used as a standard. On the other hand, I, unlike II and other oxystilbene derivatives so far examined, had a cardiotonic effect. In this respect, the effect of I on the isolated guinea-pig heart is noteworthy. Owing to its negligible hormonal side effect, the above-mentioned activities of I are of considerable interest.
