Microscopic examiantion of a !arge specimen of nevus of Ota revealed active epidermal and dermal melanocytes. Nevus of Ota appears to arise when the normal inhibition to pigment formation is removed. Perineural and vascular melanocytes were found in certain areas of the specimen. The significance of these melanocytes is not known.
