Future Curbside Design with Autonomous and Shared Mobility

The curbside is the demarcation between the roadway and the sidewalk. While Autonomous vehicles (AVs) and shared mobility has changed people’s lifestyles, the curbside is facing greater pressures. And there is no doubt that the curbside is hard to manage with the intensification of demand for curbside use in the delivery, ridesharing service and the new access for AVs. To solve such problems and meet new demands, the curbside needs to be redesigned in the city. Drawing on examination of the previous literature and curbside projects, this paper explores the trend of curbside research and design. Through the analysis of different curbside users, this study proposes a future curbside design for AVs and shared mobility.
