Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have the potential to revolutionize urban transportation by enhancing safety, efficiency and convenience, particularly as last-mile transport connectors that link first or last destinations to major transport networks. However, integrating AVs into existing urban infrastructure remains a significant challenge. This research examines the application of autonomous shuttle bus systems in Mawson Lakes, South Australia, with a focus on optimizing scheduling and navigation technologies. Using a mixed-methods approach, including intercept surveys and MATLAB simulations, this study investigates the demand for autonomous shuttle services, optimizes routes, and evaluates navigation algorithms. The findings demonstrate the feasibility of implementing an on-demand autonomous shuttle system, highlighting its potential to reduce travel time and enhance transportation efficiency in urban environments.
