Within the field of Japanese cinema studies, “women’s cinema” has not been fully recognized as a legitimate subject, neither has it been understood outside of a dichotomic relation to the dominant genres of Japanese cinema. This paper will focus on the shoshimin-eiga (middle class films) made in Shochiku Kamata film studios in the 1920’s and 1930’s, examining specifically the film Burden of Life, (1935) which, in its figure of the Moga / modern girl deconstructs patriarchal images of women at that time. My paper will raise questions specifically relating to the position of ”women’s cinema” in Japanese cinema studies, a nd re-examine filmic images in order to address critical conceptions of “women’s cinema” that has relegated it as a de-politicized, domestic melodrama for a segregated female audience. The second goal of this paper connects to a larger thesis project of examining the types of images and discourses that figure in the cinema’s reciprocal role in the production and reproduction of “the Japanese Modern, ” such as in the cultural representations of the Moga / modern girl often depicted in the shoshimin-eiga.
