TERAYAMA Shuji (1935-1983) is renowned as a Haiku-Tanka poet, or a dramatist, an organizer of the avant-garde theatrical company, Tenjo-Sajiki. In contrast to such activities, less attention has been paid to his writing a number of TV drama scenarios in the 1960s because researchers have had limited access to his past TV programs. In 2010, however, the situation changed; NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) tentatively began to open up its archives for academic use. This paper is written making full use of NHK’s “Trial Research for Academic Utilization of the NHK Archives.”

The focus of this paper is on the relation between Terayama and TV medium. The central questions are how Terayama tackled the themes that existed between image and word or between reality and fiction, and when and why he started considering topics relating to art genre and media. Along with these questions, the importance of the NHK archives to humane studies will be analyzed.

The above questions will be answered through examination of several TV programs. The TV drama, Ippiki (The Only One, directed by WADA Ben, NHK, 1963), has a crucial importance in understanding how Terayama saw art genre and media. Working with WADA Ben (1930-2011), Terayama learned to realize that scenarios must have thematic differences according to features of each media. The purpose of this paper is to make clear that Terayama had inexhaustible interest in the features of art genre and media.
