It is of interest to prepare thin films of room temperature nematic liquid crystal monomer that maintains a high degree of order and transparency after polymerization. The absence of a spacer between the mesogen and polymerization groups in UCL-001, the material used in our studies, results in the appearance of a room temperature nematic phase. After UV-induced photopolymerizaFlon, howevery, the level of haze is unacceptabty high. In order to clarify the origin of this haze after polymerization, we compared the order parameter before and after polymerization. The order parameter was determined by polarized FT-IR spectroscopy before and after polymerization. X-ray diffraction measurements were also made to observe structural changes caused by the polymerization.
