Two novel bis(phthalocyaninato)lutetium(III)-based metallomesogens(1and2) were synthesized. It was found that these derivatives exhibit an interesting phase transition behaviour; Col_h→Cub_1→Cub_2→Col<tet>→IL. It is the first time in the liquid crystalline phthalocyanine derivatives that two different cubic phases could be observed. Furthermore, it was revealed from electronic absorption spectra of the solutions of 1 and 2 in CDCl_3- n-hexane mixed solvents that the intermolecular charge transfer band at ca. 2000nm was strongly related to the molecular association band at ca. 650nm. Temperature-dependent electronic absorption spectra of the thin films of these compounds also revealed that the molecules gradually dissociate even in the columns with heating.
