Discotic liquid crystals based on phthalocynnine(Pc), 2-(12-Acrytoyloxldodecyloxy)-3-methoxy-9,10,16,17,23,24 hexakis(3,4-dialkoxyphenoxy)phthalocyaninato coppe(II), 1, (abbrebiated as [C_B(Acryloyl)]PcCu) and the precurso,2, (abbreviated as [C_n(OH)]PcCu) were synthesized for n=10, 12, 14. Liquid crystalline phases of Pc detivatives(1,2) were elucidated by temperature-dependent X-ray diffractometry and temperature-dependent electronic absorption spectroscopy. These Pc derivatives (1,2) exhibit five kinds of columnar mesophases (X, Colh1, Colh2, Colh3 and Co1tet). Moreover, the tetragonal columnar mesophase (Co1tet) showed spontaneous homeotropic alignment. The casting films of Xphase of the Pc derivatives (1,2) at r.t. also showed perfect homeotropic alignment.
