We have designed and synthesized folic acid derivatives having a 2-(3,4-dialkyloxyphenyl)ethyl-substituted oligo(glutamate) moiety. These compounds show discotic and/or cubic thermotropic liquid crystallinity in wide ranges of temperatures. The phase structures depend on the length of the alkyl chains. The addition of 0.5 mol of sodium triflate widens the temperature ranges of the cubic phases. The change of the selfassembling structures has been examined by an X-ray diffractometer and a CD spectrometer.
