Photorefractive effect of a series of ferroelectric liquid crystals doped with a photoconductive compound was investigated. Photorefractive effect was observed at the temperature at which the samples exhibited the ferroelectricity. The electric field dependence of the diffraction efficiency was investigated. The diffraction efficiency increased as increasing the intensity of the external electric field to 0.2V/μm. The response time was measured to be 〜30ms, which was faster than those reported in nematic liquid crystals. It was concluded that the mechanism of the photorefractivity in ferroelectric liquid crystals were attributed to the reorientation of the spontaneous polarization.
