The photorefractive effect of the isotropic phase of a liquid crystalline polymer was investigated. NBA6 did not exhibit a liquid crystal phase at a dopant concentration of 30 Wt%. The measurement was performed on the isotropic phase. The photorefractive effect was strongly dependent on temperature. We measured the transmittance of a laser beam through the sample. The transmittance of the laser was also dependent on temperature. The transmittance took the smallest value at a temperature at which the diffraction efficiency was largest. It was considered that there were microscopic domains in the isotropic phase of the sample. These small domains introduced a higher electrooptic effect and enhanced the photorefractivity.
