The side-chain type liquid crystalline polymer (SCLCP) is expected to apply as a functional material owing to arrangement of side-chains and the property to freeze mesophase in the glassy state. Carbazole is one of the chromophores having multifunctional properties such as photoconductivity, hole-transporting property and luminescent property. The enhancement of these properties is expected by the orientation of molecules. The arrangement of the SCLCP is lost due to mobility of the polymer backbone in a typical relaxation process if the polymer has low glass transition temperature (T_g). Therefore, we attempt to synthesize the SCLCP with polymaleimide as the polymer backbone having high T_g. In this study, we synthesized polymaleimides containing carbazolyl group and investigated thermal properties of these polymers.
