The local layer response of the electroclinic effect in a SmA phase was measured using synchrotron time resolved microbeam X-ray diffraction in combination with an optical response. It is shown that the bookshelf structure at the low field transforms to the combination of the deformed horizontal chevron and the vertical chevron at the high filed to compensate the reduction of layer spacing due to the molecular tilt caused by the electroclinic effect. Appearance of the vertical chevron structure in the elecroclinic effect is confirmed for the first time.
