The effect of the structures of photoconductive compounds on the photorefractive effect of ferroelectric liquid crystals was investigated using two-beam coupling experiments. The mechanism of the photorefractive effect in FLCs is comprised of the formation of space-charge field and the reorientation of the spontaneous polarization. The photorefractivity was greatly affected by the miscibility of the photoconductive compound with FLCs. As increasing the concentration of photoconductive compounds, the gain coefficient become larger. The miscibility of photoconductive compound was governed bv its molecular structure.
