Recently photonic crystal has attracted much attention from both fundamental physical and practical view points. The liquid crystals with the helical structure can be treated as one - dimensional photonic crystal. Especially, the studies on a local mode induced by introducing the defect into the periodic structure have been intensively carried out. In this study we analyze theoretically the local mode in a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) having a defect layer. It was found that, although the position of the local mode is independent of the thickness of CLC layer, the thickness of the defect layer strong influence both the peak number and wavelength of the local mode. The molecular alignment at the interfaces between CLC and defect layers also influences the characteristic of the local mode.
