Disc-shaped hexaazatriphenylenes with six flexible aromatic side chains 1 (with diphenylaminobiphenyl groups) and 2 (with phenoxybiphenyl groups) do form hexagonal discotic liquid crystals in spite of lacking flexible alkyl side chains, as indicated by DSC measurement, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. For the formation of the discotic liquid crystals, the flexibility of the terminal groups (diphenylamino and phenoxy groups) and the length of the biphenylene spacer play important role.
