Rod-shaped smectic and fan-shaped columnar liquid crystalline monomers with an imidazolium salt moiety have been prepared to form two- and one-dimensional anisotropic ion-conductive polymers. Mixtures of these monomers and a photoinitiator were aligned uniformly in a glass cell and were polymerized by UV light irradiation. Free-standing transparent polymer films have been obtained after the irradiation. SEM measurements of the films show that macroscopically oriented nanostructured films have been obtained by photopolymerization of oriented monomers. Anisotropic ionic conductivities have been measured for these nanostructured polymers.
