The investigation of alignment and anchoring strength of nematic liquid crystal on surface relief grating is important. In this study, azimuthal anchoring strength of micron scaled surface relief grating was measured by torque balance method. To discuss the azimuthal anchoring strength, numerical estimation was also carried out by finite element method and Berreman's theory. It is found that the experimentally measured azimuthal anchoring strength is an order of magnitude smaller than that of the numerical results. It seems that these difference is due to the model where the small director deviation from the genuine easy axis is not taken into account.
