We numerically analyzed the relationship between the electro-optical properties and the birefringence dispersion of the retardation film Δn_R(λ) in a single-polarizer reflective TN-LCD operating at low on-voltage to confirm the possibility of reducing power consumption. We found that the LCD exhibits a NW-mode achromatic image of high luminous reflectance and high contrast ratio, even when the on-voltage of TFT-LCD was reduced to 2V, if we optimized the Δn_R(λ). The power consumption of the panel can thus be decreased to 1/2 to 1/3 that of a presently used reflective TFT-LCD operating at 3.2V in the on-state, while maintaining a high-quality image.
