Ionic liquid crystalline homopolymers and copolymers, having ammonium, pyridinium, and imidazolium groups, were synthesized. Their thermal and orientational properties were examined. The relationship between ionic interactions and the liquid crystal formation of the ionic liquid crystalline polymers with mesogenic side-groups was estimated. The ionic interactions led to the formation of the layered structures with sublayers and the enhancement of the thermal stability of the anisotropic orientations. The existence in the sublayers formed by ions was supported by the X-ray diffraction measurement.
