Liquid crystallinity of dialkylviologen-dodecylsulfate ion pairs (DC_nV-DS, n=8-16) were studied. The DC_nV-DS were synthesized by double decomposition. Thermotropic phase transition for the series of DC_nV-DS were investigated by differntial scanning calorimetly, temperature controlled X-ray diffraction, polarlized optical microscopy. Didodecylviologen dodecylsulfate (DC_<12>V-DS), for an example, showed a smectic A phase between 190℃ and 240℃. The layer distance of the SmA phase was 3.2 nm, which supports an double layer type molecular assembly in the SmA phase.
