A fast secondary electro-optical effect (that is Kerr effect) will be observed in blue phase liquid crystals, and many researches and developments have been carried out aggressively toward a practical application. However, measured voltage-transmittance characteristics do not always fit closely with calculated ones and it has been a big problem in a design of liquid crystal devices. Here, by taking into account not only electronic polarization but also the deformation of blue phase structure, that is the rotation of liquid crystal directors, it was found that the simulated result corresponded with the experimental one well.
