Rod-shaped molecules containing carbonate moieties or ionic moieties have been designed and synthesized. These molecules have been complexed with lithium salts. Liquid-crystalline properties of the mixtures have been studied by polarizing optical microscopic observation, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. They show smectic A phases. The ionic conductivities of the mixtures have been examined by an AC impedance method.
