A bistable LCD, switched between Symmetric (π-φ) twisted state and Anti-Symmetric (φ) opposite_twisted state, using negative nematic materials has been investigated. It has a possibility to realize a high contrast display due to obtaining a pure dark state under the vertical alignment at S(π-φ). However, to obtain the memory in a long time is difficult due to the specific bistable mechanism. We took notice of the application a concentric rubbing method to evaluate or observe the region of bistable transitions in our cells, that is, the angle of rubbing directions between the upper and lower substrates can be continuously varied in the LC cell.
