We report the first example of visualizing Maxwell stress perpendicular to the electric field in ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals (NF LC). Unlike conventional rigid ferroelectrics or dielectric elastomers, the fluidic NF LC underwent large deformation by the Maxwell stress under a low driving voltage, demonstrating potential applications for electrostatic actuators. Systematic analysis of both kinetic and electric data revealed that NF LC's continuous transition of paraelectricity to ferroelectricity was critical, generating large forces with an apparent threshold. The generated force was proportional to the electric field and accumulating charge on the electrode/liquid crystal interface, exemplifying an unprecedented repulsion mode of fluid ferroelectrics.
