We have previously reported that lower-order liquid crystalline (LC) phases, such as the smectic A phase, when the rigid part of viologen is made asymmetric. In general, it has been reported that for ionic molecules, the strength of the electrostatic interactions and volume ratio between anions and cations determine the phase structure and thermal stability. In this study, we investigated the effect of counter anions on the formation of LC phases in the viologen with asymmetric cores, which we have created.
