Optical rotatory power(ORP) and circular dichroism(CD) measurements were made to investigate helical structures in antiferroelectric liquid crystals. The antiferroelectric liquid crystals used were MHFPDBC(n=12), MHFPUBC(n=11) and MHFPHBC(n=7) of different in alkyl chain length. The experimental results of ORP and CD showed that the alkyl chain length is an important factor for stabilizing the helical structure. In the ferrielectric SmCγ*, which had a long helical pitch, the CD spectrum showed a high absorption peak due to π-π* transition. The ORP obtained from CD spectrum using Kramers-Kronig formula was discussed in comparison with the experimental results of ORP.
