Abstract
When using the chalkboard the size of the letters and the color of the chalk are usually based upon either the writer's experience or his subjectivity of the moment. This research was designed to determine minimum discernible letter sizes for the purpose of more legible chalkboard writing in instruction. It summarizes data based upon the learners' ability to see when viewing various sizes of letters from different viewing distances and angles, when using different colors of chalk, and under varied conditions of chalkboard illumination. In addition, a color brightness spot meter was used to measure the contrast and color of chalked writing and the amount of change involved when different methods of lighting and writing are used. It is thought that by using these results, seating arrangements based upon the learners' eyesight can better be determined; and also that based upon seating arrangements, the size of chalkboard writing required can be specified. Furthermore, it is felt that this data can be referred to actual instructional situations.
