To favor the extension of human lactoferrin (hLF) and bovine lactoferrin (bLF) assay from research or specialized centers to routine clinical laboratories, we developed a latex agglutination turbidimetric immunoassay (LA) method that is simple to use, yet reliable. Based on the formation of immunocomplexes in the presence of antibody-coated latex particles, it overcomes many of the technical drawbacks show by ELISA methods, such as long incubation times and the need for special equipment and skilled personnel.
This assay also is particularly suited to routine work: the test time is short 10 min (fully automated assay); the measurement range is broad (from ～40 to 1600 ng/ml for hLF and bLF); there is a high correlation to the ELISA method (r=0.9944); and automation is easy. Here we describe characteristics and performance of the methods.
