Polyvinyl alcohol fiber was acetalized with benzaldehyde, using methanol-water as a solvent for the latter.
Influence of the previous heat treatment of the fiber and the composition and the temperature of the acetalization bath were studied in detail.
Emulsion of benzaldehyde was also used for the acetalization. When the degree of acetalization was higher than 30mol%, the fibers were resistent in boiling water.
