In Japan, freshwater fishes are conspicuous in the number of domestic alien species, because they include many commercially important species, some of which have been long and widely stocked, together with the contaminated species. In addition, domestic alien fishes are recently increasing, owing to the rise of online shopping in the 21th century. Hybridization with native species is one of the major problems caused by domestic alien species. Interspecies hybridization possibly causes the extinction of native species, owing to competition and genetic pollution, while intraspecies hybridization embodies the risk of outbreeding depression leading to the decline of native populations. Compared with the former type, the latter type hybridization is generally difficult to detect only by visual inspection. Therefore, in the viewpoint of stock enhancement as well as conservation, it seems necessary that more attention be paid to the stocking of exotic fishes.
