The promotion of female farmers is necessary for the sustainable development of agriculture. Considering the ageing of female farmers, identifying and training the next generation of farmers is essential. However, as female farmers are scattered throughout rural communities, the government faces limitations in approaching them. This study investigates the means of connecting female farmers using personal network analysis, which focuses on the relationships between individuals. Furthermore, as previous studies have demonstrated gender differences in personal networks, this study compares the characteristics of personal networks of men and those of women to determine the network formation methods necessary for promoting the activities of female farmers. The characteristics of personal networks between men, between women, and across generations are confirmed. The study proposes that young female farmers should be provided with a “gateway” group and should be encouraged to make effective use of unofficial relationships such as friendships.
