A multi-variate analysis was applied to dialectal data which were ordered by area and age. Lexical and grammatical items in ‘glottograms’ (maps showing dialectal distribution by area and age simultaneously) of the Mogami district in Yamagata Prefecture have been rendered to ‘Hayasi’ squantification theory, type III'.
As for lexical items, the district was divided into three areas (settlement1 to 12, 13 to 28, and 29 to 31). Many ‘new dialectal forms’ (shinhogen) were observed to be distributed among the younger people inthe central city, and some others in mountainous region. As for grammaticalitems, the district was divided into two areas (settlement 1 to 28and 29 to 31). The ‘new dialectal forms’ were observed to have beenadopted by the younger people of the whole area.
Thus an overall consideration of the dialectal changes and an objectivedivision of the dialect were made possible by the application of themulti-variate analysis.
