This paper mainly discusses the East Asian rural landscape in rice producing regions as an agroforested landscape associated with the SATOYAMA. The research areas cover western Japan, South Korea and southern China. From Yunnan province of China, several pieces of important information on rural landscape management are introduced to deepen further understanding of the Feng-shui landscape, which is often referred to as an ideal land-use system among East Asian landscapes. The main approach used in this research is vegetation mapping based on the results of investigations using landscape ecology. This is how we reached our discussion of ecological understanding of the landscape in the region. In the final stage, we managed to evaluate historical disturbance, management systems and future requirements for conserving cultural landscapes in East Asia.
