Breeding drought-resistant agricultural varieties is essential in combating drought under global climate change. Key future research areas include: utilizing genomics for identifying and editing drought-resistant genes; exploring epigenomics and transcriptomics to uncover molecular mechanisms; analyzing drought-related changes in metabolites and proteins through metabolomics and proteomics; studying root structures to improve water absorption; promoting plant-microbe symbiosis; optimizing plant physiological and ecological responses; applying AI and big data to accelerate breeding; and integrating traditional and modern breeding techniques with multi-environment trials. These approaches will enhance drought-resistant crop innovation and agriculture’s resilience to drought.
