Employing 49 strains of saprophytic acid-fast bacilli isolated from materials of drinking (chiefly), well, spring, hot spring waters, bath, soils, roof, plant, insect, saliva of men and dust in the air, the writer made experiments on their metabolism products (e. g. indol, H2S, acid and alkali), their function of carbohydrate utilization and etc.
The resume of the principal results of these experiments follows:
1. None of all these strains formed indol.
2. Litmus milk is changed by 18 strains and alkaline blue by 14, and others are reduced white or changed not.
3. All of strains form more or less H2S.
4. Litmus milk is coagulated by 11 strains, and these strains are, except one, yellow or orange red ones.
5. All these strains have more or less boil-fastness, which was first applied by Kauffmann and Preis, and all these strains, except one, lost this boil-fastness within 50 minutes.
6. Urease is found in a majority of the strains and it is especially distinguished in "Streptothrix forms."
7. All the strains have quite a vigorous "Katalase" action. 8. Some of these strains can utilize one of these four sugars (dextrose, lactose, saccharose and maltose), some two or three, while some can utilize none at all.
We can not, however, classify these strains only with the above mentioned results.
