We aim to enhance empathy and amplify the enjoyment of music through the experience with a co-listening agent. Here we focus on the mechanism by which musical communication is established based on the sharing of internal time and investigate whether the presentation of the co-listening agent as if the user and the agent share a sense of rhythm induces empathy. In this paper, we examined the effectiveness of the agent ’s functions in 1) increasing the excitement in response to deviations from expected rhythm and pleasure in response to repeating rhythm patterns by monotonous rhythms, and 2) confusing by complex rhythms, enhance users’ sense of empathy and the agent’s human-like qualities. The result shows that the facial expression transitions of the agent’s excitement and pleasure made users feel the variety of facial expressions. The transition based on confused expressions of its face and body made users feel empathy with an agent, a sense of listening to the rhythm, a sense of comfort in the rhythm, and a sense of enjoyment in the co-listening experience. In addition, the effect size of confusion expressions is higher than pleasure/excitement expressions as it is necessary to select the scene and intensity of use in light of the negative effects on rhythmic immersion.
