This paper discusses about present state and problems of development in anthropological research concerning northern indigenous cultures of North America in Japan in the early 21st century. Several Japanese researchers have conducted studies of indigenous culture and social change in various northern regions of North America, and Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples and National Museum of Ethnology have contributed to development of the studies through their symposiums, collaborative research projects, and exhibitions, etc. However, our research results are unknown to foreign scholars and only a small number of young Japanese researchers are now studying indigenous cultures of northern North America in Japan. Finally this auhtor proposes how to improve the current research situations for the future.
