For the estimation of fracture toughness in butt welded joints, one disadvantage of fracture toughness tests using Deep Notch specimens (side notched wide plate tensile specimens) is that it is difficult to get accurate results because of the influence of welding residual stress.
In our study, to solve the aforementioned problem, we devised and developed a center notched wide plate tensile specimen that compensates for the disadvantage of Deep Notch specimen, and put it into practical use for the estimation of fracture toughness.
In this report, the fracture toughness testing with the center notched wide plate tensile specimen is discussed by comparing it with that performed using Deep Notch specimen, and its key features are summarized.
