Abstract
This research extracts the gratitude factors that are critical elements underlying the motivation of
workers and identifies the relationship between their workplaces and the desire to remain in that industry. We
administered a questionnaire survey to nurses at a public hospital, extracted gratitude elements by factor analysis, and examined the relationship between the extracted elements and the motivation of nurses to continue their current careers. Two gratitude factors were identified: appreciation for giving and appreciation for receiving. Each factor showed a significant correlation with the desire to continue working as nurses. The group with high appreciation had significantly higher vocational willingness and workplace retention scores than the group with low
appreciation. Our findings demonstrate that gratitude in a nursing workplace is closely related to the motivation of nurses and their desire to remain in the workplace.
